Most Maldives accommodation — resorts included — was not built with mobility in mind. Beach villas reached by sand paths. Overwater bungalows reached by narrow wooden bridges. Multi-storey guesthouses with stairs only. For travellers with limited mobility or who use a wheelchair, the country quietly closes off most of itself.
We didn't accept that.
A lift between floors. In a 14-room guesthouse on a Maldivian local island, this is genuinely unusual. We added it because the building has three levels and we wanted every room reachable without stairs.
Ramps at every floor transition where you'd usually find a step. Around the restaurant, between the lobby and the rooms, leading out to the beach.
Wheelchair-accessible rooms. Wider doors, roll-in showers, lower-positioned amenities, grab bars where they need to be.
Step-free path to the beach. From your room to the sand is a smooth route, not an obstacle course.
